Depression is no laughing matter, in this week’s Sunday Short Theatre choice  Depression Is A Beast is a a real life horror.

Courtney Dixon‘s 12 minute Documentary delves into Mental Health and Jenna Kanell especially. Horror fans will recognise Jenna who is an actress who has had many on screen battles with monsters. Depression Is A Beast is an intimate exploration of the impact of depression on Scream queen Kanell. The actress has faced some true evils like Art The Clown in Terrifier and vampires in Renfield.  Her biggest battle is the mental illness and this film showcases the raw impact of the illness and the complexities faced on the road to good mental health.

I will openly admit I have mild depression and anxiety. No shame admitting you may suffer or showing your vulnerable side. This  powerful documentary toured the film festivals last year show in public Kanell might look strong on the screen. Off the screen is a different matter and we do get an empathetic insight into her battles and there’s always hope. The light at the end of the tunnel isn’t far away as you think!

For modern-day scream queen, Jenna Kanell, most of the monsters she battles are in horror films, such as the cult film Terrifier and Renfield. But there is a darkness that she can’t always escape and that is depression. In this film, she shares her personal experience battling the illness and how she has learned to tame the beast.
