The Suicide Squad Gets PG-13 Rating
We maybe just less than 8 weeks away from David Ayer‘s The Suicide Squad now has it’s official rating for USA and that’s PG-13. After the R-Rating success of Deadpool and the continuing trend to create more adult themed comic book movies, Warner Bros. have decided PG-13 is a fair rating.
The news might be disappointing to some fans expecting to see gratuitous humour and violence. They will get it in moderation but not at the level they wanted. MPAA (American version of BBFC) gave the Suicide Squad for “sequences of violence and action throughout, disturbing behaviour, and suggestive content and language.”
Ayer told Entertainment Weekly back in April at CinemaCon “For an R movie, you have to decide to do it right out the gate, and that was never the case here,We were always going to hit the PG-13 rating. But the film is meant to be that. It’s got edge, and it’s got attitude. And it’s got its own voice… There’s a lot in the film that’s going to surprise people.”
Producer (& DC Cinematic Universe Brain Trust) Charles Roven further confirmed with Collider this news and for the time been the future DC Cinema Universe releases will be PG-13 too. So it means the likes of The Flash, Justice League and Wonder Woman will follow suit.
Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn Of Justice seems to be the movie ratings are been modelled around. Critically the film was less successful than Deapool which was a 15 rating proving more adult ratings can survive. However there’s plenty of comic book movies which are PG-13 which have worked, essentially certain rating don’t guarantee degrees of success. The home release version of Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn Of Justice will apparently be a adult version could DC be looking at home releases of their movies to be the R Rating some fans desire?
Movies will constantly push the boundaries of their ratings and Suicide Squad will be no different, Dark Knight Rises or any of Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies are perfect evidence how far they can go. There’s no word yet on UK rating but if we’re going by the American PG-13 it would mean the film will be 12A. But we have seen a few films PG-13 be 15 rating in UK. For anyone looking for that edgier R Rating movie, Deadpool 2, Cable or Weapon X might be your movies to check out.
Suicide Squad will land in UK&Irish cinemas from August 5th.
