Studiocanal have announced they have acquired the UK and Irish distribution rights to Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice, ahead of it’s world premiere at Cannes Film Festival.

The film’s world premiere isn’t for another few days (20th May), when it will play in the Competition strand for the coveted Palme D’Or. The searing drama is described as an exploration of Donald Trump’s rise to power in 1980s America.

The film stars Sebastian Stan (Pam & Tommy) as Donald Trump, Jeremy Strong (Succession) as the firebrand Roy Cohn, Martin Donovan (Tenet) as Fred Trump Sr, and Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm) as Ivana Trump.

The film’s script is written by Gabe Sherman. It is produced by Daniel Bekerman for Scythia Films, Jacob Jarek for Profile Pictures, Ruth Treacy and Julianne Forde for Tailored Films, and Ali Abbasi and Louis Tisné for Film Institute.
