Stolen DVD Review

Stolen is the latest in a very long string of Insurance scam action films Nicolas Cage has done to pay his debts to the IRS. It’s not rare in the film business to make a film and recoup all the costs back by writing it. It’s a total rip-off of the man with the large package’s ongoing saga Taken. Nicky Coppola plays a dude who robs a bank but him and his partner argue right before they get away and Nicky is eventually caught but burns the money. The partner (Josh Lucas) comes back and wants revenge and TAKES his daughter for ransom until Nicky pays him back all the money he lost a small sum of… 10 MILLION DOLLARS.

The film has nothing really to bother the kidnapping kid genre of action films. The only good things really are Nicky’s love of the Creedence (but we’re all seen The Big Lebowski), his toupee and the way he gets the money back which is actually quite a ingenious way to rob a bank. It’s directed by the guy who did the wonderfully over the top Con Air (also starring Nicky Coppola in a wonderful wig) Simon West. It lacks all of the humour or explosions or Steve Buscemi for that matter which made that film a bonafide gem. Simon West’s career like many Bruckheimer first timers started in commercials (which isn’t a bad thing… hello Ridley Scott) but his film career has been full of sequels (Tomb Raider) or remakes (The Mechanic) and sadly hasn’t come though on the promise of his debut film Con Air.

The other good thing about Stolen is its length you only have to suffer 90 minutes of this derivative crap. It’s not the worse film I’ve ever seen… Boondock Saints (speaking of derivative crap), Boxing Helena or The Brood are worse but it’s pretty bad. It does have some unintentional laughs especially at the truly horrendous soundtrack and Nicolas Cage’s on-going toupee history.
