Steven Spielberg Direct Film Based On Steve McQueen’s Bullitt Character

Steven Spielberg is reaping his rewards for a fantastic new version of The West Side Story. Now he’s to put a spin another classic, with a story based on the main character from 1968 action thriller Bullitt.

Deadline are reporting this new project won’t a remake of the original film, but an original story based on the character Frank Bullitt played by Steve McQueen. Spielberg is set to also produced the untitled film with Josh Singer (The Post, Spotlight) onboard to writer the screenplay. Also onboard is regular Spielberg collaborator Kristie Macosko Krieger as producer. They are joined by Steve McQueen’s son Chad and granddaughter Molly McQueen as executive producers.

Frank Bullitt is probably McQueen’s most iconic character, with the film based on a 1963 book called Mute Witness. Warner Bros originally released the film 1968, which follows  a San Francisco cop on the hunt for the mob kingpin that killed his witness. The film was directed by Peter Yates and film also became famous for it’s classic car chase scene which Steve McQueen drove himself.

There isn’t much known about the plot details for this film, it’s believed the film will be based more on the original film than the book. When the film is made there will probably a lot nods to the 1968 film which will delight fans of that film. When production gets, what actor would ideal to play the role of Frank Bullitt?

Despite  this news there is no script yet written as things seem no deals have be officially made or announced.  When things become official this film won’t Steven Spielberg‘s next film. That film will be The Fablemans  which is slightly based on the director’s own childhood in Arizona which at the moment set for a November 2022 release date.
