Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Official; Speeding To A March 2027 Release

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 - Sonic, Knuckles and Tails

Variety is this evening reporting that the Blue Speedster Hedgehog is returning for a fourth outing and that Paramount has set the newest installment in the franchise for the spring of 2027.

Currently playing in cinemas, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 has already become the top-grossing film in the franchise, currently standing at $422million worldwide with a US haul currently standing at over $218million, which has seen the film franchise top $1billion at the global box office. In the UK, the film opened to a whopping £11.7million back in December and continues to grow, so it’s no surprise that the studio would move quickly on another installment.

Based on the wildly popular Sega video-game series, the franchise began in 2020 when the first film grossed $319million just before the pandemic took hold; two years later, Sonic The Hedgehog 2 outstripped it and took $405million globally, and saw its spin-off onto streaming with an Idris Elba-led series Knuckles in 2024.

The third film, directed by Jeff Fowler (who has helmed all three thus far and may well return for Part 4), saw voice stars Ben Schwartz (Sonic), Elba (Knuckles), and Colleen O’Shaughnessey (Tails) return as they took the threat of posed by a new hedgehog, Shadow – voiced by Keanu Reeves. Live-action stars James Marsden and Tika Sumpter returned as Sonic’s human “parents” whilst Jim Carrey again donned the bald head to play both Dr. Robotnik and his evil grandfather, Gerald.

It remains to be seen whether the human cast, including Carrey, will be involved in the next installment, but the star has said he was open to returning once again when speaking to Cinema Today during the press for Sonic 3.

Sonic The Hedgehog 4 is currently slated to be released on March 19th, 2027.
