Shrek 5 Moved to Summer 2027; Won’t Compete With Avengers, Dune Or Ice Age Sequels
The next film in the Shrek franchise, Shrek 5, has been given a brand new release date: Summer 2027, moving back six months from the traditional Christmas release, as well as Avengers: Doomsday, Dune: Part 3, and Ice Age 6.
The film, originally scheduled for release on December 23, 2026, is the first in the main series since Shrek 5. However, Universal and DreamWorks Animation have since released a pair of Puss in Boots spinoffs starring Antonio Banderas. In terms of cast for the film, franchise mainstays Mike Myers (Shrek), Cameron Diaz (Fiona), and Eddie Murphy (Donkey) are all returning, with Zendaya joining as Shrek’s daughter. The film is due to be directed by Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon, who have both been involved in the franchise priorly, with Dohrn voicing Rumpelstiltskin in Shrek Forever After and Vernon being the Gingerbread Man (as well as the Shrek 2 co-director!). They will also be joined by Brad Ableson, Director of Minions: Rise of Gru.
The franchise is based on a book by William Steig and was launched as a film franchise with the release of its Oscar-winning film in 2001. The story focuses on an ogre named Shrek, who falls for Fiona, the princess of Far Far Away, who has been cursed and trapped in the body of an ogre. They are joined on their adventures by their friend Donkey, who regularly provides comic relief. The franchise is regularly praised by critics and audiences for its light-hearted takes on fairy-tale tropes.
As part of the move, Universal has also shifted up the release of Illuminationโs Untitled Event Film to April 16, 2027, instead of its original date in late June.
