Screen Anime February Line Up Will Be A ‘History Lesson’

Dive into the vast and varied history of Japanese anime this month with a new line-up celebrating films of great historical or cultural significance. Headlining the Screen Anime channel’s latest line-up is Mamoru Hosoda’s Mirai, the Academy Award and Golden Globe-nominated family adventure from Mamoru Hosoda (Wolf Children), which will be joined by Momotaro: Sacred Sailors, a controversial propaganda film and the first anime film ever made!

Screen Anime will also have to mind its language as we return to the 1990s with Cyber City Oedo 808, the beloved classic from an era renowned for its extreme violence, dedication to profanity, and British-produced dubs that turned it up to eleven! Rounding up the line-up is Hal, an artificial love story about loss, and our bingeable TV series Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo, a Sci-Fi reimagining of the literary classic!

All titles will be available on Screen Anime from 25th January 2021 until 25th February 2021. All titles will be available in both Japanese with subtitles and an English language dub, with the exception of Momotaro: Sacred Sailors, which will be available in Japanese with English subtitles only. Cyber City Oedo 808 will also have options to listen to the English language dub with either the original Japanese soundtrack, or Rory McFarlane’s UK soundtrack.

PREMIERE: MIRAI (PG)

The birth of a sibling is a joyous time for many, but not for Kun. Four years old and spoiled rotten, he sees the arrival of baby sister Mirai as competition for his parents’ love. That is, until magical encounters with an older Mirai and family past, present and future send the siblings on an intimate journey through time and space, to confront Kun’s uncertain feelings and prepare him to become the big brother he needs to be. CLASSIC: CYBER CITY OEDO 808 (15)

Oedo, 2808: A cybernetic megalopolis where dreams of a brighter tomorrow drown in a tide of violence, vice and villainy. Driven to breaking point, the forces of law and order are left with no choice but to use the very criminals they capture to help hunt their own kind.

Enter hardened cyber criminals Sengoku, Gogul, and Benten, who are presented with a stark choice: rot in jail for the rest of their lives, or join a special force of the Cyber Police and fight for one last chance for freedom. Kurumi’s heart was broken by the sudden death of her boyfriend in a tragic airplane accident. Forced to carry on without her beloved Hal, she fell into a reclusive and joyless existence. Kurumi had given up on the world, but a brilliant scientist devised a plan to win her back.

By melding futuristic technology with the binary equivalent of human emotion, they created an ultra-lifelike robotic surrogate to take Hal’s place and lure Kurumi from her shroud of solitude. Resistant at first, this shattered beauty slowly yielded to her feelings of longing and took comfort in the company of a robot. Though their unique bond grew stronger with each passing day, Kurumi and Hal would soon discover that nothing about their artificial love story was quite as it seemed. CURATED: MOMOTARO: SACRED SAILORS (PG)

Funded by the Navy ministry to promote recruitment and Japan’s military agenda in the South Seas, this infamous 1945 propaganda film sees Japanese fairy tale hero Momotaro lead a squad of heroic animals against evil British demons. Once thought destroyed after Japan’s surrender, this piece of anime history was rediscovered in 1983, and has been digitally restored from the sole surviving negative. The very first anime feature film.

SERIES MARATHON: GANKUTSUOU: THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO (24 Episodes)

Albert is a young man of privilege in Paris, but the trappings of his aristocratic birth leave him bored and unsatisfied.
