Samuel L Jackson To Join Spike Lee’s Oldboy?

Take out the direct to DVD films and his Agent Fury role in Avengers Assembled Samuel L Jackson seems to have been making a name for himself playing small roles in big films. It seems he’s about to add another bit part role in Spike Lee’s Oldboy remake according to LA Times a role which maybe small but very important to the film’s story.

It’s believed the part he’ll play will be of that of man been tortured by Joe (Josh Brolin or Choi Min-sik in original) extracting some of his teeth(with a hammer)   in vengeance of what happened to him (Jackson is essentially the ‘warden’ of the place where Joe is held). It’s not exactly the way a dentist would like you to remove teeth but we’re talking about one of the most visceral and disturbing scenes from the film . The sound of it this new version will be brutal however there is a chance that infamous scene may not actually be in the film but the report doesn’t spoil the fun by revealing what will be but fans of the original will happy.

In other Oldboy news Bruce Hornsby who worked on Lee’s current film Red Hook Summer soundtrack looks like he’ll be working on the score for this film too. the Grammy winning musician/composer is renowned for his Jazzy blue pieces  worked on his first ever  film score  Lee’s Basketball  documentary Kobe Doin’ Work and Lee has given Hornsby the task of creating a sound that compliments the films dark tone. Jazz may not sound something you would associate with a film like Old boy however we have seen in films that  have a dark tone that use Classical has worked fantastically well and Jazz can do the same thing. Hornsby said:

I’m working on a few things and I’ll send them to Spike soon,” he said. “The ‘D’ word has been spoken to me by him,” the musician added, referring to a dark tone Lee asked for . “But I think the score will also run the gamut

As per usual nothing has been confirmed but if it is he’ll join Sharlto Copley and Elizabeth Olsen with filming due to start this Autumn in Louisiana. You know already my views on remakes but this is one of the films I’m gradually looking forward to see, a film close to my heart plus this news will remind people Oldboy is coming.
