Director Sam Raimi has reportedly shared his hopeful plans for Crawl 2, an announced yet anticipated sequel to 2019’s box office success, creature horror Crawl

The film stars Kaya Scodelario and Barry Pepper as they attempt to make it out alive when a category 5 hurricane brings a huge, mass flood to their Florida home, allowing a flesh-eating alligator to lurk in the water and take control as one of nature’s most dangerous predators.

Crawl was directed by Alexandre Aja, with Raimi working as producer. Aja is known for his other horror features, including High Tension (2003), The Hills Have Eyes (the 2006 remake of Wes Craven’s 1977 original) and Mirrors (2008). Raimi is most known and praised for his influential horror feature debut, The Evil Dead (1981) and its 1987 and 1992 sequels.

Despite Paramount confirming the sequel in the summer of 2024, there are no further concrete updates on the sequel. However, Raimi shared his hopes for Crawl 2 with The Wrap, stating how: We’ve been trying to get a go from the studio, and they (Paramount Pictures) changed hands.”

The new group that’s come in, I’ve worked with before, the ladies and gentlemen that are great at development, and they’re interested in ‘Crawl 2,’” the filmmaker added. “That’s all I could really say right now, is now I’ve got a new hope to make it.”

Raimi has acknowledged it may seem “embarrassing to make an alligator in the basement picture”; however, he believes “there’s a crowd that loves those kinds of films, if they’re well-made and honestly trying to make this suspenseful and scary and get to know the characters.”

He adds: “If they’re really trying to do that, there’s nothing to be embarrassed about.”

It was confirmed that Aja would return to the director’s chair for Crawl 2, working on a script written by Andrew Deutschman and Jason Pagan, which will see the film’s events moved to New York City.
