Despite Variety reporting a lack of effort in moving things forward with Deadpool 4, star Ryan Reynolds is maintaining tunnel vision to get the sequel to 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine off the ground.
“Amid an industrywide pullback on superheroes, the Marvel brain trust is feeling no sense of urgency on the long-gestating “Blade” reboot or even a new “Deadpool” outing,” Variety stated last summer. It also branded the third film as “last year’s runaway hit”, thanks to its earnings of “$1.34 billion worldwide.” The film was directed by Shawn Levy and co-starred Wolverine actor Hugh Jackman, working on a plot which shovelled out fan service after fan service to earn whoops, cheers and claps from super fans in the cinema aisles.
There was a confirmed focus on Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and the mammoth cast Avengers: Doomsday instead. Nonetheless, leading man Ryan Reynolds is positive and forward-looking about his vision for what the Merc with the Mouth will do next with his new companion/best friend, even though we haven’t seen the red-masked Weapon XI in a “Deadpool will return in Doomsday” trailer.
“I have some pitches and ideas, but none of them center on Deadpool,” Reynolds shared with The Hollywood Reporter. “He is a great supporting or ensemble player. And I would always want Deadpool and Wolverine to be paired in some way.”
Reynolds also addressed that revolving the entire plot around wise-cracking assassin Deadpool, whose real name is Wade Wilson, for “a fourth time feels a little iterative and redundant.”
The star added that “Centring Deadpool works best if you take everything away from him and put his back against the wall. I can’t really do that again. A fourth time feels a little iterative and redundant. That doesn’t mean sacrificing fun. There is still an arc for Deadpool, which is fulfilling and powerful.”
