Ryan Coogler’s The X‑Files Reboot Moves Forward with Hulu Pilot Order
Oscar‑nominated filmmaker Ryan Coogler is officially bringing The X‑Files back to television, with Hulu giving a pilot order to a highly anticipated reboot of the beloved 1990s sci‑fi series. Coogler, best known for Black Panther and Sinners, will write and direct the upcoming pilot, marking a major new chapter for the franchise nearly three decades after its original debut.
At the centre of the new iteration is BAFTA‑nominated actress Danielle Deadwyler, who has been cast as one of the two lead FBI agents tasked with investigating unexplained phenomena. The series’ logline describes a narrative in which “two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long‑shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.” The second lead has not yet been announced.
Coogler will also serve as an executive producer alongside Sev Ohanian and Zinzi Coogler of Proximity Media, as well as original X‑Files creator Chris Carter.
The original X‑Files premiered on Fox in 1993 and became a cultural phenomenon with its blend of paranormal investigations and overarching conspiracy storytelling. It ran for nine seasons, was briefly revived in 2016 and 2018, and spawned two feature films. Coogler’s reboot aims to honour that legacy while offering a fresh entry point for new audiences.
This development comes as Coogler continues to enjoy critical acclaim for Sinners, which has generated significant awards buzz, and underlines his growing influence across both cinema and television. While details about release dates and the wider cast remain under wraps, the reboot represents a notable moment for fans of the franchise and for genre television more broadly.
