Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion sequel starts production
Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion’s sequel has officially begun production, with original leading duo Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino returning as executive producers for 20th Century Studios and with Hulu hired to provide streaming. Tim Federle will be producing and directing, with original screenwriter Robin Schiff returning to write the new film.
Laurence Mark will be credited for production.
Alan Cumming, Janeane Garofalo, Camryn Manheim and Julia Campbell will be reprising their roles from the original film, appearing alongside newcomers Keegan-Michael Key, Rob Huebel, Breckin Meyer, Patrick Warburton and Nathan Lee Graham.
1997’s Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion was directed by David Mirkin and centred on Kudrow and Sorvino as two friends who invent persona careers and lifestyles in order to impress their former classmates at a high school reunion. It is adapted from Schiff’s play, Ladies Room.
The film earned $29.2 million at the box office from an initial budget of $20 million and has grown to be loved as a cult classic comedy.
2005 saw the release of a prequel film, titled Romy and Michele: In the Beginning, directed by Schiff, released for TV on ABC.
“The reunion you’ve been waiting for,” Kudrow and Sorvino shared on social media. “The Romy and Michele sequel is now in production.”
Costume designer Mona May will also return to the sequel and is “excited to be a part of this amazing project to keep the DNA of the characters and design the fashions to be as fun and fabulous as the original film.”
