Screen Icon Robert Redford has passed away at the age of 89, it was reported today.
Best known for his roles in such films as The Candidate, The Sting and Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid, died in his sleep early on Tuesday morning in Utah, his home.
In a statement, Cindi Berger, chief executive of publicity firm Rogers & Cowan PMK, said Redford died in his sleep early Tuesday morning at his home in Utah.
โRobert Redford passed away on September 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah, the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved. He will be missed greatly. The family requests privacy,โ Berger said.
He made his Broadway debut in 1959โs Tall Story, then appeared later that year inย The High Tree. In 1960, he starred in Little Moon of Alban, and the following year inย Sunday in New York.
Redfordโs big screen break was George Roy Hillโs seminal crime film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. he then went on to cement his place in the film firmament with All the Presidentโs Men,ย Three Days of the Condor,ย The Great Gatsby and Out of Africa, as well as films later in his career such as Indecent Proposal, Sneakers, The Horse Whisperer, ย All Is Lost and The Old Man & The Gun.
1980’s Ordinary People, based on Judith Guestโs novel of the same name, was his directorial debut, and starred Donald Sutherland, Mary Tyler Moore, Judd Hirsch and Timothy Hutton and went on to win four Oscars, including Best Director and Best Picture.
In 1985, the Sundance Institute assumed control of the 1985 U.S. Film Festival, renaming it the Sundance Film Festival, which became one of the most prestigious and unique film festivals and a place for independent films and filmmakers to show their latest works. Steven Soderbergh, Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, Paul Thomas Anderson and Kevin Smith all had their films part of the festival.
In 2014, he garnered a new generation of fans for his part in Captain America: The Winter Soldier as Alexander Pierce, director of S.H.I.E.L.D.
He will be sorely missed.
