Road Trips to Italy to X-Men in a large papermache head as the full programme for the 3rd annual Sundance London Film And Music Festival has  been unveiled. April will see some the best films from this year’s premier American independent Sundance film festival from Utah let loose on UK cinephiles.

This years festival will include 21 feature films and 18 short films across five sections. Twenty-four films will make their world, international, European or UK premieres at Sundance London. Ten are by female filmmakers and seven are by first-time feature filmmakers, something that’s been lacking from certain film festivals the past few years.

Some of this years Sundance London  highlights include the UK premiere of Fruitvale Station the hard hitting drama based on the true story based on a 2009 incident which saw a man killed in cold blood at Bay Area subway station. It shocked the nation whilst delivered a oscar nomination worthy performance from Michael B Jordan. From X-Men to off beat comedy Michael Fassbender stars in Frank of wannabe musician who joins a band lead by an musical genius in a large paper head, film starring Maggie Gyllenhaal, Scoot McNairy, Domhnall Gleeson. Frank is part of this year’s UK spotlight with Michael Winterbottom’s The Trip To Italy the other which sees Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon on another food trip full of laughs. Glasgow Film Festival favourite Blue Ruin will make it’s second appearance in UK, starring Macon Blair an unlikely man forced to return home seeking revenge.

As ever it’s not all about film at Sundance London, Music will play it’s important role in the festival. Archive has been announced as the first headlining music act for the 2014 festival . Several of the films, both documentaries and narrative, look at the power of music, and in conjunction with screenings of Finding Fela, the festival will host a free performance from Dele Sosimi, one of the original members of Fela Kuti’s band, alongside an Afrobeat orchestra. The Art of Film Music panel will discuss the process of composing original music for films, and solo artist and former Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker will join the Hybrid Vigour Documentary panel alongside former Orange Juice frontman Edwyn Collins, which will explore how British documentary is pushing the boundaries in challenging the genres of music, biography and archive film.

Sundance Founder Robert Redford commented on this years festival  “That audiences in London have responded so positively to the films presented at the first two Sundance London festivals speaks to the power and universality of the stories told by our artists as well as the audience’s openness to exploring new ideas.”
