New Resident Evil Film From Barbarian Director Sets Release Date

Resident Evil coming back from Zach Creeger

After months of speculation, it seems a new Resident Evil film – which will seemingly be another reboot – will be coming after all and will be staying at Sony, reports Deadline.

Barbarian director Zach Cregger will direct the new film, which is set for release next year, and will be staying at its current home as rumours had spread that it was going to be finding a new home in a bidding war. But the film will be distributed by Sony once again, with Constantin Film continuing to produce. Creeger has also written the screenplay with Ballerina and John Wick scribe Shay Hatten, which is reportedly going back to the horror roots of the Capcom game series.

Constantin Film is producing and co-financing the film. Constantinโ€™s Robert Kulzer, Vertigo Entertainmentโ€™s Roy Lee (Barbarian,ย Minecraft) and Miri Yoon (Woman of the Hour, Weapons) and PlayStation Productions are also producing.
โ€œIโ€™ve been a rabid fan of these games for decades, and to be able to bring this amazing title to life is a true honor,โ€ Cregger told Deadline.

โ€œThe world ofย Resident Evilย experienced through Zachโ€™s vision is an irresistible feat,โ€ beamed Kulzer.

Added Sanford Panitch, president ofย Sony Picturesย Motion Picture Group: โ€œZach is one of the most talented exciting new directors to come on the scene in many years. His brilliant approach in restarting and refreshing this legendary Sony franchise instantly makes this one of our most important releases in 2026.โ€

Resident Evil first came to the screen in 2002 under the direction of Paul W.S. Anderson, who with star Milla Jovovich, was a part of the original franchise that ran for six films until 2016, grossing over $1.2billion. A new film, from director Johannes Roberts, titled Resident Evil: Welcome to Racoon City and starring Kaya Scodelario, came out in 2021 and added another $41milion. The series is also the second highest-grossing video game adaptation franchise behind Sonic The Hedgehog.

The new Resident Evil is set for September 18th, 2026.ย
