The revolution will not be televised, it will be in UK cinemas as Ahmir Thompson‘s (aka Questlove) celebrated documentary Summer Of Soul gets a UK Trailer.

After premiering at this year’s Sundance Film Festival winning the Grand Jury Prize as well as Audience Award, the film has been collecting acclaim. Next month Searchlight Pictures will share that ‘love’ documenting the legendary 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival. The festival that celebrated African American music and culture nicknamed ‘The Black Woodstock’. Everyone from Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Nina Simone, B.B. King, Sly and the Family Stone played at the event. All legends in their own right within music, footage that sat in someone’s basement for 50 years. The end result is a fantastic documentary from a first time filmmaker and of course much loved musician/DJ.

The film is the first official project under the Onyx Collective brand. A new content brand from Disney General Entertainment designed to curate a slate of premium entertainment by creators of colour and underrepresented voices. What a film to kick off the new brand…

In his acclaimed debut as a filmmaker, Ahmir โ€œQuestloveโ€ Thompson presents a powerful and transporting documentaryโ€”part music film, part historical record created around an epic event that celebrated Black history, culture and fashion. Over the course of six weeks in the summer of 1969, just one hundred miles south of Woodstock, The Harlem Cultural Festival was filmed in Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park). The footage was never seen and largely forgottenโ€“until now. SUMMER OF SOUL shines a light on the importance of history to our spiritual well-being and stands as a testament to the healing power of music during times of unrest, both past and present. The feature includes never-before-seen concert performances by Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly & the Family Stone, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Ray Baretto, Abbey Lincoln & Max Roach and more

Summer of Soul (…or, When the Revolution Could Not be Televised), will be released in cinemas across the UK and Ireland on 16th July, and exclusively on Disney+ Star from 30th July.
