Power Rangers Live Action Series Scrapped By Disney+

Power Rangers, a live-action TV series first announced in 2025, has been scrapped by Disney+.

Deadline reports that the series was passed for economic rather than creative reasons. As Hasbro still owns the IP, the cost of mounting a “high-end, live-action superhero series” didn’t make financial sense for Disney. The streamer has been focused on projects outside its own IP, including development deals for Ella Enchanted and the Casper series in recent months.

In its initial run, Power Rangers followed five teenagers who could “morph” into superheroes, with their own mech fighters. A film released in 1995, by director Bryan Spicer and featuring an ensemble casting of Karan Ashley, Johnny Yong Bosch, Steve Cardenas, Jason David Frank, Amy Jo Johnson, and David Yost.The franchise’s film follow-ups include 1997’s Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie by David Winning and Shuki Levy, and 2023’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always, a TV film by Charlie Haskell for Netflix.

The franchise also saw a 2017 film reboot, costing $100 million and backed by Lionsgate. Only grossing $142 million, plans beyond the film were scrapped. Titled Power Rangers: The Movie, the project was directed by Dean Israelite, working from a script penned by John Vagina and featuring Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Bill Hader, Bryan Cranston, and Elizabeth Banks. The reboot loosely revamped Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ pilot episode, ‘Day of the Dumpster‘.

A new series aimed to “reinvent the franchise for a new generation of fans while also honouring the original.” No real update followed, although the Percy Jackson and the Olympians team, including executive producers Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, were slated to write, show run and produce the show.

Hasbro have been looking to get a live-action series off the ground, and even Netflix were involved at one point several years ago. But it seems with this cancellation, fans of the franchise are doomed to wait a while longer.
