Paul Rudd And Nick Jonas Face Off In Trailer For Music Drama Power Ballad
The first trailer has been released for Power Ballad, the latest film from writer and director John Carney, offering a glimpse at a music-driven comedy drama led by Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas.
Best known for music-centred favourites such as Sing Street and Once, Carney once again returns to familiar territory with a story built around songwriting, ambition and complicated friendships.
In Power Ballad, Rudd plays Rick, a once-popular wedding singer whose career has long since peaked. While performing at a gig, he crosses paths with Danny, a former boy band star played by Jonas, whose own fame has begun to fade. The pair connect over their shared love of music and end up jamming together late into the night, with Rick performing one of his original songs.

However, their creative connection quickly becomes complicated. Danny later records the track and turns it into a major hit, reviving his career and bringing him back into the spotlight. Rick, left watching from the sidelines, sets out to reclaim recognition for the song he believes is rightfully his, even if doing so threatens the fragile friendship the two musicians have formed.
The trailer leans into Carney’s signature blend of humour, heart and music, teasing a story about creative ownership, artistic pride and the emotional stakes that come with chasing success. Alongside Rudd and Jonas, the film also features a supporting cast including Peter McDonald, Marcella Plunkett, Havana Rose Liu and Jack Reynor.
With its mix of comedy, drama and original music, Power Ballad looks set to continue Carney’s long-running fascination with the transformative power of song.
Power Ballad opens in UK cinemas on 29th May.
