Ólafur Ólafsson to replace Djimon Hounsou as How to Train your Dragon 2’s live-action villain
Following confirmation that Cate Blanchett is set to reprise her voice role as Valka in the upcoming live-action remake of Dreamwork’s How to Train your Dragon 2, released in 2014, Deadline have reported a change up in casting concerning the antagonist role of Drago Bludvist the dragon hunter.
In the original animated film, a sequel to 2010’s How to Train Your Dragon which was revamped for a live-action re-telling in 2025, our heroic duo Hiccup and Toothless battle against Bludvist in his evil quest to hijack all dragons to help him conquer the world. The role was taken up by Beninese-American actor Djimon Hounsou, known for his previous roles as Cinqué in Steven Spielberg’s Amistad (1997) and Mateo in Jim Sheridan’s In America (2002).
It has been confirmed that Honsou will not be rejoining the cast members who have reprised their animated roles in the live-action films, including the aforementioned Blanchett and Gerald Butler who plays Hiccup’s father Stoick in both the animated series and the remakes.
Instead, Ólafur Ólafsson will be taking on the role of the villain in the upcoming sequel. The Icelandic-American actor has previously appeared in 2018’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald as well as providing voice work in the Icelandic dubs of Ice Age and Lilo and Stitch.
This is actually the second time Ólafsson has worked on the How to Train your Dragon films, having also provided his voice to the third installment, released in 2019 and titled The Hidden World, as Ragnar the Rock.
The live-action remake sequel How to Train your Dragon 2 is scheduled for a 2027 release, with Mason Thames returning as Hiccup as he navigates his family tensions and helping dragons assimilate alongside humans.
