Obsession Submitted To Golden Globes As A Comedy
Curry Barker’s second feature film, Obsession, was one of the hottest topics of 2026. Starring Michael Johnston as a lovesick music store worker who accidentally uses a supernatural toy to make his crush and co-worker, played by Inde Navarrette, one of the most discussed film performances of the year, prompting her to become possessed by an obsessive, mysterious entity that pulls his life apart at the seams.
Obsessive earned critical and audience praise for its performances, plot, and atmosphere, in addition to being hailed as an example of independent, creative filmmaking needing heavy endorsement, and beingย analysed and debated countless times online due to its subtext of sexual assault and divisive stance on who the true villain was. The film also made waves at the box office, grossing a global total of $500 million from a budget of $750,000 and becoming one of the most profitable horror films, alongside the fifth highest-grossing horror film ever made and 2026’s tenth highest-grossing release.
The next step for such success is major award wins, following nods and wins at many film festivals, but an exclusive report has surprised film fans by revealing Barker’s film has been submitted to the Golden Globes as a Musical or Comedy. Such a choice pivots from assumptions that Obsession would be nominated as a Drama, due to its rather intense subject matter alluding to assault, mental health issues and a relationship which spirals into toxicity, even ending in a bloodbath.

Nonetheless, the film’s brief yet biting inclusion of a dark comedic tone has landed Obsession under comedic branding at the 84th Golden Globes, due to its release next year.ย The report cites Navarrette’s exaggerated expressions and crazy sentiments as Wish-Nikki, alongside social media’s adoption of what her character endures and dispenses in Barker’s intense screenplay as a meme.
Social media users have not taken well to the news, with one user criticising the submission as a “dumb move and also just wrong“, further stating that “Obsession has some funny moments, but it isn’t a comedy.”ย Another post replies with “calling a psychological thriller a comedy is the most violent gaslighting Hollywood has ever done,” while another reply calls out how a “horror movie about rape [has been] submitted as a comedy,” and one more branding such a move as “category fraud.”
Obsession will likely battle Antoine Fuqua’s musical biopic Michael, Christopher Nolan’s Greek poem adaptation The Odyssey, Chris Lord and Phil Miller’s sci-fi book adaptation Project Hail Mary and Cristian Mungiu’s drama Fjord for Best Picture at the Golden Globes.
