Nova Movie in Development at Marvel Studios
Loki creator Michael Waldron to write the script...
A deep-cut Marvel Comics superhero is reportedly going to make his MCU debut with a new feature film. According to Deadline, Loki creator and head writer Michael Waldron is developing a Nova movie for Marvel Studios, with plans to write the script and potentially direct the project if it moves forward.
First appearing in a 1976 issue of The Man Called Nova #1, Nova (also known as Richard Rider) was a normal teenager from New York who was selected to inherit the powers and uniform of a dying alien Centurion, becoming a member of the intergalactic police force known as the Nova Corps. He has superhuman abilities, including enhanced strength, flight, and resistance to injury.
Nova has several storylines that writers could draw from to introduce him to the MCU and allow him to interact with popular characters. Nova Corps, for instance, has already been featured in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. In the comics, Nova has also had battles with the Skrulls, who have played significant roles in recent projects, such as Captain Marvel and the limited series Secret Invasion.
Marvel had previously been developing the comic as a TV show with Moon Knight writer Sabir Pirzada helming the script, but plans for that were shelved in 2025. However, a leak of Waldron’s WGA card last week revealed Nova being listed as a credit and that he’d tackle a new pitch.
Waldron already has strong ties with Disney and Marvel. He penned the Doctor Strange sequel, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and has been the showrunner on one of Marvel’s biggest TV shows, Loki. He also recently wrapped production on the second season of the hit series Chad Powers, starring Glen Powell, for Disney+ and Hulu.
