Nick Frost To Play Hagrid In Upcoming HBO Harry Potter Series
According to various reports from Deadline and Variety (via ComingSoon), British actor Nick Frost is nearing a deal to star as Hogwarts groundskeeper Rubeus Hagrid in the upcoming HBO adaptation of Harry Potter. Though the network has not confirmed the casting at this time, rumours of the casting have been circulating following cryptic social media posts and growing online discussions around the show.
The role of Hagrid, originally played by the late Robbie Coltrane in the eight Harry Potter films, is an iconic character within the Hogwarts world. Frost, best known for his roles in the Cornetto trilogy, would undoubtedly make the character his own but most would agree that he has big shoes to fill.
In a statement from HBO, they said “we appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumour and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalise deals.”
So far, the series has added a few key names to its cast, including the likes of John Lithgow and Paapa Essiedu. A lot of the speculation around Frost’s involvement began after a cryptic Instagram post on 20th March. Fans also noted that Frost recently started following the aforementioned confirmed actors on Instagram around the time this post was made.
This new version of Harry Potter which is being called a “faithful adaptation” of the original books by HBO, will see Francesca Gardiner acting as showrunner with Succession‘s Mark Mylod directing multiple episodes and serving as executive producer.
At this time, the only confirmed cast member is John Lithgow, who will be playing Headmaster Albus Dumbledore. The roles of Harry, Ron and Hermione have yet to be announced after Warner Bros. launched an open casting call for children aged 9 to 11 in 2024. Janet McTeer and Paapa Essiedu are currently in final talks for the roles of Minerva McGonagall and Severus Snape.
