Netflix Picks 10th April 2015
Yes, it’s only been a four day week, but it sure seemed a long one. If you’ve reached Friday and are ready to drop, why not chill out over the weekend and enjoy some of this week’s Netflix Picks.
New to Netflix – Daredevil
Daredevil is the first collaboration between Netflix and Marvel and runs over 13 episodes. The show tells the story of Matt Murdoch, a blind lawyer who uses his superhumanly enhanced other senses to fight crime, namely in New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen. Already receiving huge amounts of positive reviews, with some saying that this is darker, in look and tone, than a lot of the Marvel Universe, it will certainly be one to watch. It also bodes well for future Marvel and Netflix projects, AKA Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders.
TV Series – Fargo
Although named after the film, Fargo the TV series has nothing to do with the 1996 Coen brothers’ classic. Instead, it evokes the same feel as the film, with a seemingly ordinary man with dark intentions gradually getting into more and more trouble. Beautifully shot, incredibly smart, and with a cast full of fantastic actors who can manage the drama as well as the darkly comic story, including Martin Freeman, Billy Bob Thornton, Allison Tolman, Colin Hanks, and Bob Odenkirk, Fargo is truly excellent TV.
Blockbuster – Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol
Say what you want about Tom Cruise, at 52 he is still one hell of an action star. With the new Mission Impossible instalment, with even crazier stunts, just around the corner, why not revisit Brad Bird’s exhilarating and incredibly enjoyable effort. We see Jeremy Renner and Paula Patton join the crew as they try to stop a dangerous terrorist from gaining Russian nuclear launch codes. Cruise does a lot of his own stunts, and some of them, including a climb up the tallest structure in the world, are truly breathtaking.
Indie classic – Sex, Lies, and Videotape
Although Steven Soderbergh has sadly retired from filmmaking now, it is still interesting to look back at his first feature, a film he wrote in 8 days that went onto win the Palme d’Or at Cannes. Sex, Lies, and Videotape tells a story of four thirty somethings who sexual lives are a bit of a mess. Ann (Andie MacDowell) is no longer sleeping with her husband John (Peter Gallagher) as she feels sex is overrated, so he is sleeping with her passionate sister (Laura San Giacomo). Ann however, becomes interested in impotent friend Graham, who, unable to satisfy himself the normal way, videotapes the sexual fantasies of women. All of the main four actors are superb, but it is James Spader as the charismatic Graham that really steals the show in this erotic and intelligent film.
