Sebastian Meise’s acclaimed film set to be Austria’s Oscar entry

Great Freedom_(2021)

Many critics have said 2021 Film festivals have unleashed a wonderful array of great films. Boutique streaming service MUBI have noticed this as well and today announce they have added LGBTQ Austrian drama Great Freedom and below we get a look at the film’s UK Trailer.

The film had its world premiere at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, where it picked up the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize Award. A searing depiction of love in the face of injustice, the film has also recently been selected as Austriaโ€™s submission for Best International Feature Film at the 2022 Academy Awardsยฎ.

The film stars German actor Franz Rogowski (Luzifer, Transit). We find ourselves in post war Germany, Hans (Rogowski) is imprisoned over and over again for being homosexual. He ends up with one steady relationship, his cell mate a convicted murderer Viktor. Over time the friendship blossoms into love.

Since the film’s world premiere, Sebastien Meise‘s film has garnered some very positive reviews. This is a story of love, one of politics and personal storytelling. Being imprisoned for your sexuality, something sadly many gay men and women even today suffer from. Sometimes that prison isn’t always one in a mundane building.

In post-war Germany, liberation by the Allies does not mean freedom for everyone. Hans has been found guilty for his homosexuality, deemed grounds for imprisonment under Paragraph 175. Over the course of decades, he is spied on and repeatedly jailed as a result.

As Hans returns to prison again and again, he develops an unlikely bond with his cellmate Viktor, a convicted murderer. What begins as revulsion blossoms over time into something far more tender.

The film also stars Georg Friedrich, Anton von Lucke and Thomas Prenn. Great Freedom will be released in UK and Irish cinemas from 4th March 2022,
