MUBI In May Will Be Without Rules And For ‘One Day’

The weather might be slowly settling into something cool or even hot, MUBI are programming your Spring essential viewing. In May the line up at the streaming channel will be  ‘without rules’ and be for ‘One Day’.

The month rules won’t apply with a selection of short films from Romanian filmmaker Radu Jude. Films that are set over one day plus fiction and reality from The Ross Brothers.

MUBI RELEASE: GASOLINE RAINBOW

Celebrated directorial duo the Ross Brothers take their pioneering blend of fiction and reality to the realm of the cinematic road trip with Gasoline Rainbow (2023). Fresh off its World Premiere at this year’s SXSW, MUBI will exclusively present this undoubtedly candid yet deeply loving expansive portrait of the new generation as told in their own words. With high school in the rearview, five teenagers from inland Oregon embark on one last adventure. Piling into a van with a busted tail light and no money, their mission takes them to places they’ve never been, hundreds of miles away.

Through desert wilderness, industrial backwaters, and city streets, they connect with outsiders on the fringes and discover their lives will be determined by the trails they blaze themselves. Gasoline Rainbow depicts a wild and true coming-of-age; with a beating heart and an irrepressible spirit, this rhapsodic look at today’s American West reminds us of the timeless joys of community and the eccentric individuals who contribute to it.

Gasoline Rainbow (Ross Brothers, 2023) – 31st May

VOILÀ VARDA
Agnes Varda's Beaches of Vada on MUBI in May
The beloved icon of the French New Wave is celebrated through this retrospective which follows the trajectory of her exuberant career. Known for her playfulness, joie de vivre, and fondness for outsiders, Agnès Varda was already an established filmmaker by the time the French New Wave was at the peak of its popularity, and with Cléo from 5 to 7 (1962) she delivers a feminist perspective to the male-dominated French industry with her intimate portrayal of a woman strolling Paris for two hours while waiting for worrying medical news.

Towards the millennium, Varda shifted her focus to feature-length documentaries: The Gleaners and I (2000) is a dedicatory account of the misrepresented gleaners of France, from gatherers, recyclers, and treasure hunters, whereas in The Beaches of Agnès (2008), she uses her own career to build a probing self-portrait, allowing for a poignant musing on work, love, and ageing.
