Mike Flanagan’s Exorcist Movie Still Years Away
In a recent Q&A on Tumblr (via Dark Horizons), Mike Flanagan gave an update on his upcoming Exorcist movie, revealing that it won’t start production any time soon.
It was reported last year that Flanagan, best known for his Netflix shows The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass and The Fall of the House of Usher, would be working on a brand new take on the Exorcist franchise, with Universal Pictures scheduling the project for a March 13th 2026, release.
Flanagan is currently promoting his new movie, The Life of Chuck, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year. He is also prioritising his Carrie series for Amazon MGM Studios, which is still in the early stages of development.
When asked about the Exorcist project, Flanagan said, “Production hasn’t started, we need to finish Carrie first. No way it’s coming out next March. Nothing to worry about though.”
Universal spent $400 million on a new Exorcist trilogy from David Gordon Green, director of the most recent Halloween trilogy. However, the first movie, The Exorcist: Believer, debuted to negative reviews upon its release in 2023 and underperformed at the box office, earning only $137 million. From this, Universal opted to give creative control to Flanagan, allowing him to, as he puts it, do something that has “never been done within the franchise – something that honours what came before it but isn’t built on nostalgia.”
