Matt Shakman On Passing The Baton To The Russo Brothers For Avengers: Doomsday
In an interview with Deadline, Fantastic Four director Matt Shakman revealed, whilst on the blue carpet for the film’s world premiere, how his new film sets up future MCU releases and passes the baton on to the Russo brothers, who will direct Avengers: Doomsday.
When discussing how the Russos factored into the new Marvel Studios film, Shakman saidย โThey were very curious about what we were doing, they came to tour our sets, they would watch scenes that we were cutting together, they wanted to get to know these people as they were working on their story and their script, so that I could pass the baton to them and these characters would be well cared for.โ
This new iteration of Marvel’s first family, releasing in cinemas July 25th, will see an alternate take on the characters set within a retrofuturistic parallel universe to the main MCU timeline. The movie, according to Shakman, is just as inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey as it is influenced by the original comics by Jack Kirby.
Shakman has previously justified his decision to go with Galactus for this new Fantastic Four movie over Doctor Doom to not interfere with the upcoming Avengers project.
When asked about the forthcoming MCU team-up movie, Galactus’ actor, Ralph Ineson said โI have no idea what Kevin Feige and everybody have planned, but I worked with Robert [Downey Jr.] a few years ago on Dolittle for a few days, and heโs an absolute gentleman and amazing actor, so I loved having the chance to work with him and watch him work, so, yeah, if I got the chance to team up with him again, of course I would.โ
Despite delays in release for both Doomsday and Secret Wars, as well as recent underwhelming box office numbers, Kevin Feige is looking to change the MCU’s approach to theatrical and series releases moving forward. This was also backed up by Ryan Coogler, who executive-produced Ironheart, as he openly expressed how the series sets up future connections for the MCU to explore in exciting ways.
Avengers: Doomsday is currently in production with its story remaining under wraps. The project will see Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach returning as the Fantastic Four, amongst a stacked cast that includes Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Paul Rudd, Letitia Wright, Florence Pugh, Simu Liu, Tom Hiddleston, Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Winston Duke, Danny Ramirez, Hannah John-Kamen, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, Channing Tatum, Tenoch Huerta Mejรญa, Lewis Pullman and Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.
