Mamma Mia 3! Could Reunite Fans with Meryl Streep

Meryl Streep acknowledges crowd at Cannes

With Mamma Mia! 3 underway, Stellan Skarsgård has teased Meryl Streep’s return. In conversation with US Weekly, Skarsgård touched on the actress’s potential comeback despite events of the previous instalment.

In the 2026 Golden Globes press room, the actor seemed to hint at the possibility of reuniting with the Oscar winner. “Everybody can be brought back in the movies,” he stated. “In the movies, it’s fantastic!”

Streep played Donna Sheridan in the two previous Mamma Mia! films, notably marrying Sam (Pierce Brosnan) in the first entry. She then appeared in flashbacks and spirit sequences in 2018’s Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, having passed away before the film’s events.

Ahead of the threequel, Skarsgård, who plays Bill Anderson, wants to shift the narrative: “She’s not dead, you know! Meryl Streep [as Donna] is not dead.” The actress herself is yet to comment on the speculation, nor have any official casting decisions been made.

But the film is moving forward. Franchise star Amanda Seyfried declared it to be “happening” in 2025, and Skarsgård has further cemented the film’s positive status. It remains to be seen whether fan favourite Streep will make a triumphant return.
