Loki Ep3

This week Loki finds himself trapped on an apocalyptic planet with no way of escape.

After following The Loki Variant (who we now know calls herself Sylvie โ€“ portrayed by Sophia Di Martino) last episode, episode 3 begins with Loki and Sylvie fighting it out at the TVA headquarters and almost being killed by agents before Loki transports them to Lamentis โ€“ a planet that is momentarily going to be destroyed by another planet crashing into it. So begins a back and forth between the two variants as both refuse to trust the other, more fighting happens and slightly clunky dialogue until they get to the point of having a civil conversation.

I was hoping that by episode 3 Iโ€™d be really into this series but still there is something just not working for me. After this episode, Iโ€™m not the biggest fan of Sylvie as a character or the performance behind it โ€“ maybe this will change as the series progresses and the reasons as to why her character is like that will make more sense โ€“ but currently I just find her not very interesting?

At the centre of this episode is an almost heartfelt conversation between Sylvie and Loki as they discuss their childhoods and mothers. While I was delighted to hear Loki being confirmed canon bisexual โ€“ a big deal although a potential cop-out if Loki doesnโ€™t survive at the end of this series and appear in more of the films in the future โ€“ the sentimental tone of this conversation felt weirdly out of place and out of character. ย Hiddlestonโ€™s performance continues to excel, with him singing an Asgardian song in the bar being a great moment and the recall to the first Thor film with โ€œAnother! smashbeing delightful. But the direction theyโ€™re taking the character in is sometimes feeling a little forced. Also I am not enjoying the hinting towards a romance between Sylvie and Loki that occurred throughout this episode.

While I didnโ€™t enjoy the action scene at the end of this episode – I felt it was messy and badly directed โ€“ I did enjoy the ending which is a plus. But the biggest minus of this episode is there was no appearance of Owen Wilsonโ€™s Mobius. Letโ€™s hope heโ€™s back next week.
