Lily Wachowski “done” with The Matrix
Director Lily Wachowski has shared how she is done with making new The Matrix films despite Warner Bros. determination to keep the sci-fi franchise going. Wachowski directed the first Matrix film, The Matrix, with her sister Lana Wachowski in 1999, starring Keanu Reeves as a computer hacker in a dystopian world who discovered he and everyone else is living in a simulation.
The first film additionally starred Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving, and Joe Pantoliano, and grossed $473.3 million against an initial budget of $63 million. Additional critical acclaim and immediate cementing in film and pop culture due to revolutionary editing and gripping thematic manner saw the film spawn a franchise of three sequels- Reloaded in 2003, Revolutions in 2003 and Resurrections in 2021.
A recent sit down with Kim Masters on KCRW’s The Business saw Wachowski address how Warner Bros. is headstrong to extend on of its most recognised titles, despite her personal stepping back from the property.
“Warner Bros.—they want to make another [movie]. They’re always going to want to make another thing,” the filmmaker shared. “Personally, I don’t want to play in that sandbox anymore. I’m kind of done.”
The filmmaker also added that Drew Goddard, writer of book adaptations World War Z, The Martian and Project Hail Mary, “doesn’t want to go forward unless he gets our blessing,” leading to what she cites as “…this complicated situation—that maybe we’re going to stick our noses in a tiny bit and see how we feel.”
“And if we want to pass on our blessing to Drew or not,” Wachowski concluded. “So could be something that’s coming down the road, but it’s still unknown.”

An April 2024 report stated how Goddard had been hired by Warner Bros. to lead The Matrix 5.
“Drew came to Warner Bros with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters,” Jesse Ehrman, Warner Bros Motion Pictures President of Production, shared upon the news. “The entire team at Warner Bros Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making this new Matrix film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.”
“I need to give myself space to find the best story,” Goddard had previously told Deadline. “I think the approach will be the way I approach anything, which is, do I love it? And I love what Lana and Lilly Wachowski did with those movies.”
“They mean so much to me and I feel like they’ve had a profound impact on my creative voice,” he added. “I take this responsibility very seriously. I feel the weight of wanting to do right by the fans, wanting to do right by the creators and wanting to do right for myself as a fan.”
