LIFF 2011:UK Trailer for The Awakening starring Rebecca Hall, Dominic West
The horror genre is in a need of a massive refurbishment. Its tired,overran with mediocre films or straight to dvd carbon copies of the successful films the movie you dont really of until they appear at your local HMV ,so where do filmmakers have to look at to attempt something refreshing? Things are now looking a little better in the horror department with Daniel Radcliffe’s Poe-esque The Woman In Black which arrives in February but in November we will see Nick Murphy’s The Awakening.
The horror thriller stars Rebecca Hall, Dominic West and Imelda Staunton set in 1920’s Florence (Hall) is on a mission to expose all séances as exploitative shams after the death of her fiance which still haunts her. However, when she is called to a boys’ boarding school to investigate a case of the uncanny, she is gradually forced to confront her skepticism in the most terrifying way, shaking her scientific convictions and her sense of self to the very core. Anything working on the psychological horror wave length gets me hooked on a film and The Awakening is certainly that, movies like The Others , The Haunting even Del Toro’s The Orphanage look to have inspired this movie. Apart from that Hall and West on screen relationship looks a perfect match and Imelda Staunton minus her Dolores Umbridge laugh looks the part too.
The Awakening looks a geniune scary gothic style chiller which has just made its Toronto Film Festival premier which helped the movie be picked up by Studio Canal, however the movie is going to make its European premier at London Film Festival next month before its release on November 11th.
