After Yang (2021)

What is it like to be human? It’s the burning question asked in Kogonada‘s gorgeous look sci-fi After Yang. A24 have released the first Trailer that asks what makes a family?

Kogonoda made a name for himself as a video essayist only to find himself directing Columbus. This film is his much anticipated follow up and once again it looks like he won’t disappoint.

The film is set in the near future, in a world which androids are part of our every day lives. With emotions, feelings even memories and when Jake’s (Farrell) daughter’s companion Yang (Justin H.Min) malfunctions he attempts to fix him. Making him question life and connected with his wife (Jodie Turner-Smith).

Our reviews editor Scott J Davis watched the film at the recently ended Sundance Film Festival giving the film a 5 star review. He called the film “a meticulously composed, thoughtful, and beautiful film“.

We love our genre films like sci-fi and especially the films that don’t play the norms of the genre. The film is one of those films, that showcases that it’s not all Star Wars style battle, but films that try to challenge our moral compass. This looks an evocative delight that Tarkovsky or even Kubrick may have created, full of atmosphere, arty and reflective.
