It’s nearly time for the Awards Season, today in London the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) announced it’s 2024 nominees. Rich Peppiatt’s Belfast based comedy Kneecap lead the nominees with an impressive 14 nominations!
The west Belfast hip-hop trio and their mission to save their mother tongue leads the nominations with gaining nominations for Best Director, Best Screenplay, The Douglas Hickox Award (Best Debut Director). The Kneecap trio Liam Óg Ó Hannaidh, Naoise Ó Cairealláin, JJ Ó Dochartaigh are nominated for Best Joint Lead Performance.
Just behind Kneecap with 12 nominations is Queer Noir Love Lies Bleeding from 2020 BIFA winner Rose Glass. Noms in Best British Independent Film, Best Director, plus Best Joint Lead Performance for stars Katy O’Brian and Kristen Stewart. Nora Fingscheidt‘s The Outrun starring Saoirse Ronan is the third big runner with 9 noms. Based on Amy Liptrot’s best-selling novel of self-discovery and sobriety in the wilds of Orkney.
Andrea Arnold’s Bird, Rungano Nyoni’s powerful On Becoming a Guinea Fowl and James Krishna Floyd’s Unicorns all score 7. With Luna Carmoon‘s visceral and intense tale Hoard and Alex Garland’s Civil War both gain 6.
The 2024 British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) will recognise 29 British films. Which of them will win, we will find out on 8th December when the winners are announced…
