Kevin Williamson has revealed that he currently has no plans to return to the director’s chair for a potential eighth instalment of the long-running Scream franchise.
Williamson, who wrote the original Screamand several of its sequels, recently stepped into the director’s role for Scream 7. It marks the first time he has directed a film in the series he helped create. Despite that milestone, the filmmaker has suggested that another chapter could benefit from a different voice behind the camera.
Speaking about the future of the franchise, Williamson explained that while he still has ideas for where the story could go, he is open to seeing another filmmaker take the reins. He expressed curiosity about how new storytellers might approach the iconic horror series, suggesting that fresh perspectives can keep long-running franchises feeling alive and inventive.
“I think the next Scream I’ll probably step back,” Williamson told HelloSidney“I want to direct another film that I have written. That is just waiting for me to find the time to direct. Right now I’m working on a couple of TV shows. Maybe I’ll direct one of those. Who knows?”
Discussion around an eighth film has continued to build in recent months, even though a follow-up has not yet been officially confirmed. The continued popularity of the franchise and the anticipation surrounding Scream 7have kept speculation about future instalments firmly in the conversation among fans.
Williamson’s connection to the series stretches back nearly three decades. The original film, directed by Wes Craven, helped redefine the slasher genre in the 1990s with its self-aware humour and sharp commentary on horror conventions. It also introduced audiences to the enduring character of Sidney Prescott, played by Neve Campbell.
Whether or not Williamson directs another instalment, his influence on Scream remains undeniable. As the franchise continues to evolve, fans will be watching closely to see if Scream 8 becomes a reality and who might ultimately guide the next chapter of the Ghostface saga.
Scream 7 is in cinemas now.
