Mute has been a long time coming for Zowie Bowie aka Duncan Jones and finally after so many false starts, dead ends filming have finally started. Today we also learn that the Netflix-bound sci-fi Noir feature has a new cast member onboard, Justin Theroux.

Variety is reporting Girl In The Train actor Justin Theroux has now joinedย Alexander Skarsgard and Paul Rudd in an unnamed role. How big or small Theroux’s role will be is also unknown,Skarsgard will play the titular role as the mute bartender called Leo Beiler. A story that’s set in a Dystopian Berlin, 30 years into the future , ย with Paul Rudd will play a surgeon who may have clues to the whereabouts of Leo’s girlfriend.

Here’s the Synopsis:ย Berlin. Forty years from today. A roiling city of immigrants, where East crashes against West in a science-fiction Casablanca. Leo Beiler, a mute bartender has one reason and one reason only for living here, and sheโ€™s disappeared. But when Leoโ€™s search takes him deeper into the cityโ€™s underbelly, an odd pair of American surgeons seem to be the only recurring clue, and Leo canโ€™t tell if they can help, or who he should fear most.

Jones also described to Empire that Mute will be a ย โ€œthriller with a very weird tone,it goes very dark, then it also goes very darkly funny. Itโ€™s science-fiction urban, so it certainly owes some of its influence to Blade Runner.โ€

โ€œMute is an encapsulation of everything I am fascinated by; noir, science fiction, and unique people in trouble because of who and what they are. Iโ€™m delighted to be able to return to Berlin for the shoot, a place I lived for a period of time growing up, and Iโ€™m excited to be working with Netflix on a film that is so close to my heart.โ€

ย Netflix has bought the right to distribute the movie further highlighting the power the streaming giants are establishing, challenging the traditional tropes of cinema. After the disappointing Warcraft Duncan Jones looks like he’ll be back on form with this project, now making something personal to him rather than an established source. The question people will be asking is this going to be a ‘sequel’ or ‘prequel’ to Moon with Sam Rockwell turning up? We’ll jus thave to wait until 2017 to find out.
