Since his first appearance on the big screen in 2004’s I Heart Huckabees, Jonah Hill has become one of Hollywood’s biggest and most versatile stars. Whether it’s a serious dramatic turn or a foul-mouthed comedy character, Hill is an extremely popular and recognisable performer. We take a look at the five best films starring the Los Angeles-born actor.
5. Get Him to the Greek (2010)
A spin-off from 2008’s Forgetting Sarah Marshall (a film where Hill also appears briefly), this caper focuses on rock-star supreme Aldous Snow (Russell Brand) and his route back to the big-time. Hill plays record company intern and ultimate Snow fan Aaron Green, who is charged with getting the controversial singing sensation from London to an anniversary performance at the Greek Theatre in L.A. Of course, it’s not easy keeping a handle on an out-of-control celebrity and Green is soon a part of Snow’s rock star lifestyle. However, he still needs to get him over to America as to not suffer the wrath of his boss. Can Green do it, or is Snow just too much of a diva?
4. The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
Martin Scorsese’s latest film sees Leonardo di Caprio play Jordan Belfort, in a story based on the real life events of the stockbroker who got sucked into a world of crime. Belfort befriends Donnie Azoff (Hill) and the pair decide to go into business together. Their operation takes advantage of the ‘pump and dump’ stock fraud method and they quickly generate millions of dollars, which they soon spend on drugs, parties and other not-so-cheap thrills. For his performance as unexpected playboy Donnie, Hill was nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Supporting Actor category.
3. 21 Jump Street (2012)
Once again playing the nerd, Hill teams up with heartthrob Channing Tatum for buddy-cop movie 21 Jump Street. This foul-mouthed action movie sees Schmidt (Hill) and Jenko (Tatum) return to high school, with the intention of uncovering an illegal synthetic drug operation among the students. In a reversal of their own high-school years, Schmidt becomes the popular kid, while former jock Jenko is the subject of taunts and ostracising. The hilarious chemistry between the two makes for a rowdy and raucous comedy, which is soon set to return to the big-screen for a sequel. Make sure you catch 22 Jump Street at Cineworld this summer.
2. Moneyball (2011)
Another drama based on a true story sees Hill star as Peter Brand, a baseball fan obsessed with statistics who comes up with a formula for success on a lean budget. Starring alongside Brad Pitt as Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane, the pair aim to transform a team of no-hopers into a championship winning side using computer-generated analysis. It’s a classic zero-to-hero sports story, with Hill receiving his first ever Oscar nomination for his performance.
1. Superbad (2007)
The ultimate tale of three outsiders who for one night become law-breaking, party-crashing, bad boys, before they all head off to college. Superbad became an instant hit among critics and audiences, with Seth (Hill), Evan (Michael Cera) and Fogell aka McLovin (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) all doing their best to buy booze, sleep with girls and generally appear popular. This gross-out, teen comedy adventure is a must for anyone who wishes they were just a little bit wilder when they were younger and features a truly memorable performance from Hill as a wannabe badass.
