22nd July Justin Lin‘s Star Trek Beyond will once again boldly go where no one has gone before and it seems they will be with one of their main characters. During a Australian promotion for the film actor John Cho who plays USS Enterprise helmsman Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu is gay.

In an interview with Herald Sun Sulu will be the franchise’s first openly gay character, a loving father in a same sex partnership with a young daughter. It was a decision made by actor/writer Simon Pegg (who plays Scotty) and director Lin as a nod to George Takei who played Sulu in the original TV series who is also gay himself.

Cho told the Australian newspaperย โ€œI liked the approach, which was not to make a big thing out it, which is where I hope we are going as a species, to not politicise oneโ€™s personal orientations,โ€.

Despite the message which we applaud Paramount, Pegg and Lin Science Fiction haven’t been as enterprising but now future civilisations will be up to date in modern day demographics. Takei is an advocate of LGBT rights and has been fighting for equality since he came out himself in 2005 afterย ย Arnold Schwarzenegger’s veto of a bill to legalise same-sex marriage in California. Things changed in 2008 when he and his then partner became the first same sex marriage license. He is still one of Hollywood’s most prominent activists he recently urged the LGBT Community in USA to fight for Gun reform after the tragic events in Orlando recently.

It’s an important year not just for Paramount but also Star Trek Franchise who are celebrating their 50th year , this news remind us of the spirit of the original series. This is just as important as Uhura’s(Nichelle Nicholls) ย interracial kiss with Kirk in 1960’s, pulling down barriers. Despite Sulu’s pride now out it will be a heartfelt atmosphere with the tragic death of Anton Yelchin due to a freak accident, the news will still be raw on the minds of everyone involved in the film.

In Star Trek Beyond the Enterprise is in the middle of it’s 5 year mission to explore the galaxy and boldly go where no one has gone before. As the crew try to decide where next on that mission things suddenly go wrong when they confront new unknown baddie Krall (Idris Elba) who is against all that Federation Of Planets (aka Starfleet) stand for. The attack find s the crew scrambling to a nearby planet, scattered everywhere could mean the crew attempt to re-unite with each other to regain control of the Enterprise.

Star Trek Beyond arrives in UK&Irish cinemas from 22nd Julyย
