The Iron Lady Rules…At The Box Office

THE IRON LADY took the UK by storm this weekend when the film was the No 1 opener at the box office, taking over £2.1m. This figure is nearly three times the box office achieved by THE QUEEN when it opened in 2006.

Such popular acclaim for the film is not unique to the UK. Released two weeks ago in Australia, THE IRON LADY is an antipodean hit – destined to join the exclusive club of films whose gross exceeds $10m. Similarly in Spain, the only other country where THE IRON LADY is on general release, the film has opened at number 2 at the box office, just behind SHERLOCK HOLMES 2. It is a remarkable achievement.

Unsurprisingly the buzz is now building around the release of the film in the US where it opens this Friday. The film had a technical release on 4 prints on December 30th to qualify for the Oscars. Even on such a limited release, the film managed to gross a stellar $220,000 on its opening weekend.

The world appears keen to engage with THE IRON LADY!

Whatever your opinion of Margaret Thatcher  which will probably depend on your political views or what part of UK your from(or if your from one of the millions of families she destroyed)  but we can’t deny is Meyrll Streep is terrifying like the Iron Lady herself especially in voice!

THE IRON LADY tells the compelling story of Margaret Thatcher, a woman who smashed through the barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male-dominated world. The story concerns power and the price that is paid for power, and is a surprising and intimate portrait of an extraordinary and complex woman.

The film stars Academy Award-winners Meryl Streep as Lady Thatcher and Jim Broadbent as Denis Thatcher. Their young selves are played by Alexandra Roach and Harry Lloyd. The rest of the cast of family and friends, politicians and advisers, is made up of the very best of British acting talent, including: Olivia Colman, Nicholas Farrell, Susan Brown, Roger Allam, Anthony Head, Julian Wadham, Pip Torrens, Nick Dunning, Richard E Grant, David Westhead, Angus Wright and John Sessions.

The film is a Pathé, Film4, UK Film Council presentation with the participation of Canal+ and Cine Cinema in association with Goldcrest Film Production LLP of a DJ Films Production.

Pathé will distribute the film in France; and Fox will distribute the film in the UK on behalf of Pathé.
