Interview: See How They Run’s Tom George and Charlie Cooper on a whodunnit for 2022

The whodunnit. It seems to be built into the British DNA, thanks mainly to Agatha Christie and her band of eccentric amateur detectives. And our affection for them is such that we can’t resist a parody or two – which is exactly what director Tom George has chosen to give us for his debut feature.
The brains behind the award winning TV mockumentary, This Country, his first venture on the big screen is See How They Run, set in London’s West End during the 50s. Plans for a movie version of hit play are thrown off-kilter when a member of the crew is murdered. World-weary Inspector Stoppard (Sam Rockwell), with help from enthusiastic new arrival Constable Stalker (Saoirse Ronan), takes on the case and they soon find themselves in the midst of a baffling theatre land mystery, one that could put their own lives in danger.
In the interviews below, George talks about the popularity of whodunnits and his favourite Christie character, as well as describing how he brought together a glittering ensemble cast including Wes Anderson regulars, Ronan and Adrien Brody, as well as two faces from This Country. One of them is Charlie Cooper who considers how he’d react if he was really asked to star in The Mousetrap on stage and describes what it was like working with Brody. With so many famous names around him, he was “permanently star struck.”
See How They Run is released in cinemas on Friday, 9th September. Read our review.
