It is 11 a.m. on Friday, August 16th, and I am sitting in the Castle Suites of the Caledonian Hotel in Edinburgh. Opposite me are legendary comedian Nina Conti and actor and voiceover artist Shenoah Allan. The pair sat down with me for an exclusive interview ahead of the world premiere of Sunlight at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
Sunlight follows the lead characters, Roy and Jane, an unlikely pair, as they travel through New Mexico. The film also explores the highs and lows of their lives and the discovery of love in the most unexpected places.
Speaking with Nina and Shenoah, we learned how important the film is to them, the significance of the Monkey character, the role of humour in achieving happiness, and, most importantly, what it was like for Shenoah to act alongside someone in a monkey suit.
A darkly comedic, subversive and uniquely realised road trip film about a monkey, a man and a dead man’s watch. A woman escaping a toxic relationship ends up on the road in a monkey suit with a man seeking retribution from his dead father.Â
Co-written with Shenoah Allen, and produced and directed by Fringe stalwart Nina Conti, who also stars as a life-size iteration of her stand-up sidekick, this is fantastically absurd, original and funny. A natural, inventive extension of Conti’s sell-out comedy act.
