“Hide Your Gold!” – Lionsgate To Reboot Leprechaun For A 2013

Now this is taking the biscuit, after the last few years of film market been dominated by comic book related films and re-boots, remakes, long awaited follow ups the list is now going to increase with the new of the return of Leprechaun. WWE Studios (yes that Vince McMahon owned Sports entertainment) with the help of Lionsgate have announced they are to re boot the film (probably the franchise) and will have a few people raising more than just the people’s eyebrow ala The Rock style!
One thing Leprechaun has done probably gave a certain Warwick Davis a regular income after he hung up his Ewok suit, Leprechaun will also be known as the film that gave Jeniffer Anniston her big break too. Starting away back in 1993 the long running franchise saw murdering Leprechaun looking for his pot of gold spawning over 5 sequels with such classics as Leprechaun: In the Hood and Leprechaun: In Space. This franchise didn’t become a hit for world class acting from it’s cast, it was a product that gained cult status through curiosity of going to the video store picking up your vhs copy this was before the internet was around so after cinema you had to go to Blockbuster to watch the home released version!
Variety are reports no director has been chosen yet but they are looking to get the first of a two film deal out in 2013 and according to WWE Studios SEO Michael Luisi :
We have been looking for ways to continue our relationship with Lionsgate and we saw โLeprechaunโ as the perfect opportunity to take a well-known franchise and put a modern-day spin on it. This is a property that we believe our audience will respond to and we continue to look for ways to surprise and engage them.
The current target audience majority of them would probably wouldn’t have been born when the first film was doing the rounds or even heard of the film, as for the modern spin ? I-pad and listens to hip-hop? Kills his victims by tweeting them? found footage/torture porn? No word on Warwick Davis taking up the role again however I believe there is a dwarf wrestler in the WWE and keeping with WWE tradition that wrestler or wrestlers will appear in this. The big question is do we really care or are we surprised? In a way I’m not Hollywood has squezzed, scrapped drained every possible potential film to be remade right upto end of the 1980’s so it’s no surprise that we’re now starting on 1990’s!!!
