In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Harrison Ford is looking back over some of his recent roles.
While promoting his new film Captain America: Brave New World the star shared with WSJ his reaction to the unsuccessful box office of 2023’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. “Shit happens,” Ford told WSJ “I was really the one who felt there was another story to tell. When [Indy] had suffered the consequences of the life that he had to live, I wanted one more chance to pick him up and shake the dust off his ass and stick him out there, bereft of some of his vigor, to see what happened.”
Directed by James Mangold, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was the fifth and seemingly final instalment in the Indiana Jones franchise. The film was a disappointment at the box office and it is estimated to have lost around $143 million dollars. Despite the film’s box office performance Ford said, “I’m still happy I made that movie.”
Much of the interview is devoted to Ford’s television work. The actor currently stars on two separate ensemble shows Shrinking on Apple + and Yellowstone 1923 on Paramount Plus. This is a new and enjoyable way of working for an actor who has spent years as a leading man in film “It’s a surprise every time the script comes out,” he told WSJ. “I’ve never done that in my life.”
However Ford isn’t giving up on film just yet. Having been the face of massive Disney franchises Indiana Jones and Star Wars, Ford has now pivoted to Marvel with Captain America: Brave New World. Ford admitted he signed on to the film despite not having seen a script. “I saw enough Marvels to see actors that I admired having a good time,” he explained. The actor joked he had accepted the part without realising the hulk sized responsibilities that came with it “I didn’t really know that at the end I would turn into the Red Hulk” he said.
“Well, it’s like life,” Ford said. “You only get so far in the kit until the last page of the instructions is missing.”
