Happiness Is In Watching The UK Trailer For Little Joe

Emily Beecham and Ben Whishaw star in Jessica Hausner‘s unsettling sci-fi Little Joe. Happiness Is A Business when you watch the new official UK Trailer released by the BFI.

This film looks a strange little psycho drama. Playing on the power of flowers and how they change moods of (unhappy/stressed) people. In a world were genetically modified items are becoming a normality, it’s terrifying to think what’s next?! This one makes me think of Little Shop Horrors, Day Of The Triffids and Invasion Of The Body Snatchers!

The film follows Alice (Beecham), a plant breeder whose just created a species of plant. They call it ‘Little Joe’ and is meant to help change peoples moods, making them ‘happier’. When she breaks all protocols taking one of the plants home, things take a sinister turn.

Plenty of slow burning atmosphere in this one brings a sense of dread. A film with social commentary tucked in many corners, questioning humanity. We are becoming an society relying too much on dependence on anti-depressants and this film looks like will tap into that.

Alice, a single mother, is a dedicated senior plant breeder at a corporation engaged in developing new species. She has engineered a very special crimson flower, remarkable not only for its beauty but also for its therapeutic value: if kept at the ideal temperature, fed properly and spoken to regularly, this plant makes its owner happy. Against company policy, Alice takes one home as a gift for her teenage son, Joe. They christen it ‘Little Joe’ but as it grows, so too does Alice’s suspicion that her new creations may not be as harmless as their nickname suggests.

The film also stars Kerry Fox, Kit Connor and David Wilmot.

Little Joe will arrive in UK Cinemas from 21st February 2020.
