Cast of Glee on stage doing what they do good at

The musical comedy-drama series Glee ran on Fox from 2009 to 2015. It gathered a serious cult fandom, averaging around 6 to 10 million U.S viewers per episode, and becoming the highest rated scripted TV series in just three years. The peak viewership came in 2011 with The Sue Sylvester Shuffle bringing in a record audience of 26.8 million viewers.

Glee took TV awards by storm, having secured 86 nominations by the end of season one and winning 37 of them – demonstrating how a show of misfits and underdogs mattered to both the arts and the public.

Therefore it’ll be nothing but excitement for the public to learn that Glee is coming back after Disney+ and Hulu arranged a series  order for this reboot. Co-creator Ryan Murphy has been teasing and discussing a potential return, commenting on how the show has stayed relevant and continues to gain fans.

“That show is interesting because it’s come back around. So many young people now watch it. And I’m like, ‘Maybe we should revisit that show,” he said earlier this year – before later announcing a finished reboot script for the series.

Ryan Murphy won his first Emmy for this pilot episode, and the show has brought exponential fame, opportunity and creativity since. It was revealed last month that he was in touch with “around ten of the original cast members” but there is no set casting announced as of yet.

Recurring leads in the show included Lea Michelle, Jane Lynch, Chris Colfer, Matthew Morrison, as well as Kevin McHale, Dianna Agron, Cory Monteith, Amber Riley, Mark Salling, Naya Rivera and Darren Criss.

This show also featured numerous celebrity guest stars – famed ones include Neil Patrick Harris, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kristen Chenoweth, Kate Hudson and Jonathan Groff.

A number of the actors have since passed, including Cory Monteith, who had a dedication episodie in 2013, and Naya Rivera passing in 2020.

The show focuses on a glee club, The New Directions, who are labelled as a group of teenage outcasts. Under an optimistic teacher they begin to find their feet in the show choir circuit while handling endless social issues that are inherent to adolescence. The show of course is well known for questionable plotlines and biting satire, making ambitious decisions and wild stories but all contributerd to its fame and long lasting legacy.

In an interview earlier this month, Chris Colfer told Bustle “It was a really tough show to do, and it would be really hard to do it now that Naya [Rivera] is gone. But I do know that Glee fans would probably come after me with pitchforks and jazz hands if I said no.”

Current streams show that it draws around 4 million montly listeners on Spotify, meaning it should not be hard to find viewers for this upcoming reboot.
