GKIDS Acquire UK & Irish Distribution Rights To Studio Ghibli Library

Young Kiki shows off her broom in Kiki's Delivery Service

New York based Animation production and distributor GKIDS have announced they acquired the distribution rights to Studio Ghbili for the UK and Ireland.

The last few years those rights have belonged to The Elysian Film Group who unfortunately went into liquidation last month. Before then Studiocanal UK held the rights for 20 years with Walt Disney Pictures before that.

The new deal will see GKIDS own the rights to the 23 film-library. They include Spirited Away, The Boy and the Heron, Howlโ€™s Moving Castle, The Tale of The Princess Kaguya, The Wind Rises, and When Marnie Was There. Along with Princess Mononoke, My Neighbour Totoro, Ponyo, and Castle in the Sky.

British and Irish Anime fans won’t have to wait long for the first re-release, Kikiโ€™s Delivery Service coming to cinemas on IMAX from 21st August. Arriety and Whisper Of The Heart will also be getting IMAX cinematic releases with further 4K restored Studio Ghibliย  films coming in Autumn. Plus the re-release of the entire library across all home video platforms.

GKIDS will also be working more with Glasgow based Anime Limited who was recently bought by Toho Global. The overall deal includes theatrical, home video, TV, and digital. Goodfellas retains streaming rights for the territory, where it has been licensed to Netflix.
