“Let’s Get Ready To Rumble!!” If the recent WWE Royal Rumble left you frustrated and annoyed Arrow Films may have the perfect remedy in the shape of Catfight. When fist fights, violence crops up in movies we automatically assume it’s the male testosterone running wild. In Onur Turkel’s Catfight, it’s the girls who take centre stage and Sandra Oh, Anne Heche to be precise. When one-time friends paths cross they become locked and go all out battle royale, beware of the devil drink, false nails, heels. Watch the movie’s UK trailer.
This is a black and blue comedy, that promises a no holds barred slice of brutality. Reading up on this movie, these girls don’t hold back and it’s not a one-off fight. These girls won’t forget as the movie is played over a five-year period, leaving one of the ladies in a coma for two years! But is this a feminist movie?
In Catfight, struggling artist Ashley (Anne Heche) and wealthy housewife Veronica (Sandra Oh) were friends at college, but their paths have not crossed since. When they find themselves attending the same event (Ashley working as a waiter at Veronica’s rich husband’s party), their initial thinly-veiled verbal pleasantries soon take a turn, leading to an all-out brawl and all-consuming rivalry that will keep these two locked in combat for years.
With supporting appearances from Alicia Silverstone as Ashley’s lesbian love interest, and Dylan Baker playing an overworked coma doctor, Catfight turns the portrayal of women’s fights in movies on its head in the most violent of ways possible, landing a killer satirical blow at modern day society.
Debuting at last year’s Toronto Film Festival leaving with some positive reviews. With everything that’s happened Stateside, we’re promised some political and social satire especially the wealth gap. Catfight looks a nihilistic, vicious cathartic bruising black comedy worthy of a look.
Catfight is set for 10th March Cinema/Video On Demand release in the UK. Today Glasgow Film Festival kicks off and you can catch previews of the movie on 18th and 22nd February [more info, book tickets].
