Film Review – V For Vendetta (2005)
England has become a totalitarian state led under the iron fist of Chancellor Adam Sutler (John Hurt). America is no longer the leading power in the world and England lives under a regime where the government controls the media and government agents known as Fingermen work silently controlling the population and taking extreme measures if anybody gets out of hand.
Then a man steps forward into the bleak London city night and decides to take action. Only known as V (Hugo Weaving), a man dressed in a black cape, a wide brimmed black hat and a pantomime style mask meant to evoke the image of Guy Fawkes, V sees himself as England’s only hope and his style of justice will mean radical changes to the country’s ruling class.
Evie (Natalie Portman) is a TV producer working on the country’s most popular television show hosted by Deitrich (Stephen Fry), then one night as V starts the second phase of his campaign to wake up the nation to what’s really going on, he takes Evie and hides her away from those in the government that would have surely abused and tortured her to get information about him. However, this is not the only reason V needs Evie and as his plans escalate, so does Evie’s passion for his cause.
V for Vendetta is the blockbuster superhero movie from director James McTeigue with a screenplay written by The Wachowskis and adapted by Alan Moore’s graphic novel. Released only a few years before the juggernaut Marvel franchise, V for Vendetta showed audiences exactly what could be done with the superhero genre and how it could turn it all on its head, comparing the actions of a heroic vigilante to that of a terrorist. The movie adaptation is almost entirely faithful to Moore’s original story and is translated incredibly well to the screen and is on 4K Blu-ray just in time for its 15th anniversary.
Be warned though, watching V for Vendetta is an alarming experience considering what is happening in the work today. Perhaps that’s just a testament to the longevity of the movie and a sign that we may need a hero, an idea of V now more than ever.
