Certainly wasn’t expecting what unravelled throughout this captivating A.I, Jack the Ripper escapade of high ambitions on a micro budget from the Full Moon studios, directed by legendary Charles Band.
In the need of a few extra dollars, delightfully upbeat and bubbly Erin (Shannon Barnes) enlists into an experimental virtual reality situation known as Quadrant.
Sit in a dentist chair, slip on a wired up bulky helmet and seemingly live out fantasies whilst a pair of dodgy scientists look on is worth fifty-bucks a session.
It becomes apparent a wild fascination with the notorious Old London Town murderer is getting out of hand.
She begins craving more Quadrant gatherings for the historic experience rather than the money as Erin establishes a telepathy takeover into the real world.
Former patient, Robert (Christian Carrigan) warns Erin to the dangers of excessive Quadrant usage, they become friends, however her meek attitude is turning evil, changing slowly into a confident knife wielding seducer.
Conveniently living next door to a cemetery, Robert visits her home.
On the inside, Erin’s obsessiveness and admiration for the killer spread out all over the walls, bookshelves and floor.
It’s basically a Jack the Ripper shrine and Quadrant seems to be feeding her into a virtual reality killing spree.
Added to the cross world slayings are fire demons rising and some suddenly promiscuous, ample sex scenes.
Quietly monumental in the underseen straight to video gem, The Exorcists (2023) Emma Reinagel as Meg, sports a white lab coat carrying the clipboard to full effect, her trajectory and outcome alongside Erin is the backbone of this entire movie. Keep an eye on accomplished dancer, now dipping into acting, Kaylene Snarsky as a street busker, the guitar girl accepting proceeds off Erin.
A longer running time than its brief 73 minutes would have been welcomed.
Puzzling editing and unanswered questions only left me wanting more, including an Erin backstory. The off the wall no holds barred enthusiastic performance by Ms Barnes is fire, so worthy of explanation to the plight of her Ripper worship.
No classic by any standard, Quadrant is still a preposterous B-movie delight.
