Interview: Ebada Hassan and Safiyya Ingar On Their Poignant & Timely New Film Brides
In anticipation of the release of Brides, we caught up with actors Ebada Hassan and Safiyya Ingar, the leads of a refreshingly authentic Muslim coming-of-age tale, directed by Nadia Fall.
Brides follows teenage girls Muna and Doe, Pakistani and Somali, respectively, who find community through their faith and unfortunately, the rejection of who they are from Western society as a whole. Through the desperation for belonging and acceptance, they embark on a dangerous and defining journey to Syria via the Turkish border. With Muna finding it easier than Doe to let go of what’s back home, the two girls battle through moral, emotional and personal dilemmas to try and make it to a life they feel they deserve.
The pair discussed their creative input throughout the production, how their vision of the film was shaped, the positive reactions from young audiences and why the film is so crucial today.
Brides premiered at Sundance 2025, where it took part in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition to great acclaim and stellar reviews.
